This paper was extemporaneous in response to a call for papers in a leadership class at the University of Phoenix. Authority and conviction encompasses authenticity, commitment, ethical standards, honesty, leadership and a host of complementary character compliances.

The Attention Getter

For some reason I asked for viral meningitis back in the mid 80s. At the time I was in the midst of trying circumstances and questioned the very nature of behavior beyond words of commitment and loyalty; the trust we seek in relationships and life. At least choosing the illness is what a progressive self-initiating viewpoint might offer. I was in a very conflicting and difficult internal place dealing with a job that meant working with airborne weapons –  helicopters, fighter jets and missiles for the Department of Defense.

I was also feeling like there was no support in my marriage because instead of counseling or therapy, my wife chose to follow the pattern her mother set… involve other men. I was especially conflicted because we had just completed a spiritually-focused process in our church, too, resulting in eternal commitments that I took quite seriously. So I created a time for me to take stock in my own life’s mission and purpose once again. The analysis of authority and conviction brings varying opinions. I took it to new depths.

I spent several weeks flat on my back with a headache so bad that I wished I could make my transition and free myself of the pain and turmoil. It was not meant to be and I learned to go much deeper into my own being and nature to find the place of peace within. It did not change what was happening on the outside. It sure gave me some clarity on the inside, though. I began to recognize how I had set up my own cognitive dissonance. The culmination of the current dilemmas produced the proverbial ‘time out’ that I had to take due to the fact that I could barely open my eyes because of the pain from the light, even in a darkened room. What does that say about the metaphor of keeping your light under a basket?

Occasionally I have to remind myself of the wonderfully nasty headaches when I get too focused on the mundane and my mind wants too much control over processes that are not controllable or in my best interests. Even understanding the amazing ability to choose what you experience, sometimes we have to be reminded to stop, listen and look around. As I paused by our pond recently, a couple of decades later, in a moment of contemplation attempting to move through my headache, I heard a cicada for the first time this year. It seems a bit early for them here. Maybe I’m just not noticing time the way I used to; seeming to move much faster as I get older.

As I just relaxed and released to its song I felt a deep sense of gratitude. My headache subsided as my mind responded to the stillness. The song of the cicada reminded me of the ‘white noise’ that I’ve found many hear. I’ve used this ‘noise’ to help me meditate as focusing on it without ‘trying’ to listen often decreases its pitch and leads to some very interesting places in consciousness. In this ‘pause for the cause’ I was gifted with the following stream of consciousness. A natural desire for argument may cross your mind as you read. However, I would ask that you read with an open mind and heart as much as possible.

The Inner Stream

One who truly speaks with authority does so because they HAVE IT. It is a part of them, often beyond the scope of their own knowing, exuding from their presence even as a young person. When in positions of power and public view, leaders who speak with authority can be heard not only with the head; the heart responds as well. Their words are FELT in the depths of one’s BEING. Everyone has felt the difference at some point in their lives, whether verbally acknowledged or simply logged in their own consciousness. Consider the difference when you are looking for people to work with on a personal or professional basis.

One does not need an office or position to speak with authority of the heart. There are many who weather the storm of personal, political, or professional resistance to authenticity, honesty, and integrity of our natural desire to bond with one another. We’ve been duped into believing that duality is a natural state of being when in fact, non-duality is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient. Science is even proving the notion of an anthropic universe [life-friendly] through quantum physics and complexology, a new field of study that uses a holistic approach to understanding our physical world. Holistic philosophy, aka spirituality, maintains that all things are connected. So we have no excuse for not being responsible for the affects of our actions and thoughts.

One who speaks with unauthentic conviction, not having ‘authority’, is convicted almost before they begin… of many false beliefs because of the lack of FEELING. It is noticeable in the lack of resonance in one’s depths and audiences recognize it as well, or at least some do. Emotional manipulation is easy with these types as their mission is to intimidate (covertly and subtly) the actions of the audience toward their own personal agenda or bias. There is often a ‘hidden’ agenda behind this type of presentation. The awareness in our own feeling without emotional attachment is intuitively how we know, or feel, we can trust someone.

The feeling is undeniable and the lack of it irrefutable when one relies on the heart-felt resonance of vibration, whether uttered from the mouth or displayed in print through one’s words doesn’t matter, it is in their energy field for those who have the ability to feel. That would be everyone for those of you wanting to feel separate from your own power now. It appears that our ability to act as citizens prompted by this authentic presence and natural desire to be friendly and loving toward others has been depressed and even subverted by those who speak with a lack of authentic conviction, meaning their agendas do not support life or love, even though they may say all the right words to make the willing believers (our natural state is trust) feel safe. In fact, many have become so desensitized by the rapid-fire information age that this natural internal state of discernment and recognition has been lost.

Critical self-reflection as we listen to or read our own words is always happening within the truth circuits of our naturally oriented love consciousness, which resides in truth. “As I speak, therefore I AM” to paraphrase a wise one. We have the ability to be Self-monitoring in alignment with Divine Flow within us at ALL TIMES. We choose to remove ourselves from it. It is that simple. All the kingdoms sing praise when you can stop and listen to their song. Our natural state is one of love and surrender, faith and trust. This can also swell into a torrent of energy, commanding resonance in ALL THAT IS when we focus on the awareness of Oneness, non-duality thinking.

We might call this the ‘War in Righteousness’ that is beyond any ONE person yet is encompassed by ALL. It is a sense of serenity that, paradoxically, disrupts anything that is out of alignment with itself, humans being the most obvious example at this time. Humans have in turn, affected their very survival by infecting the Earth with their selfish acts backed by evil intent. btw… this is not the work of some EVIL ONE. This was the choice of individuals who then drew together to support one another. See what they/we have done? In the formality of non-dualistic thinking, us and them become ‘we’ and there is no ego without ‘wego’ in the sense of our collective responsibility. Without pointing fingers, we can acknowledge that life as we know it can get much better and we have the methods and technology to affect change toward a more holistic local, national, and global renaissance of simply looking out for one another instead of destroying ourselves and our environment.

Now imagine what we could do with the same, or even greater, concerted effort in calling for authentic authority and responsible action. Imagine what pure motives and unselfish behavior could do to turn the tide of desire, desolation, and destruction. We often resist the religious or spiritual messages that promote our divine unity and brother/sisterhood of spirit across the sand-drawn boundaries of cultures and ethnic distinctions. Recent scientific discoveries in tracking genetic lineage shows that we are all related, so why are we not able to act as a family? Serendipitously, I had an experience when first contemplating the depth of my connection just after going through a rather disheartening divorce. Being adopted with no results of research for lineage, I have an over-riding “Who Am I?” question that is a precursor to action of any depth in nature.

Inquiring Even Further

One early morning shortly after midnight in June of ’88 I asked the question internally and was answered externally by an elder friend setting next to me. We had been talking about other matters earlier so his verbal outburst would have made little or no sense had I not just asked the question. His words were, “You are Zendor!” in a rather loud and authoritative voice. He was not a ‘channeler’ or psychic that I was aware. Still, out it came.

As it did, my second sight turned on and the video screen showed a starscape and stone-arched huge wooden castle door in the center, slowly opening outward toward me. I laughed as I head the phrase, “door to what is” echo in my head as I watched the scene silently. What a piece of work! I was in awe for years…still am during these moments of reflection and writing. It makes me realize how small I am in the great generosity of God. Still, what the heck do you do with experiences like this?

Now I’m going to take it to another level, so remember that I asked for an open mind and heart as you read further. I’m not asking you to believe a thing that I write. Many believe that we came from somewhere else initially and have been watched for millennia by our predecessors or progenitors. Much like the Star Trek Prime Directive, in order for our ancestry (forefathers, space families, or whatever you wish to call them) to engage actively with our Earth, logic would seem to dictate that we must first meet some requirements mandated for developing civilizations before they can be taken into any Confederation of Planets or Galactic Federation of any kind.

Looming Questions

I’d say that makes good sense, wouldn’t you? Barbarians on the loose in space just doesn’t sound like a good idea now does it? So what must happen? What are their requirements? What do we need to do if there is some ‘event’ looming in our near future? What exactly could it be? Is it truly conceivable that a whole planet could be wiped out? Would it be possible to avoid it? What does this ‘end of time’ scenario really mean? What can we demonstrate of our knowledge and wisdom to date? What does the scientific evidence, empirical and unemotional, give indication toward possible outcomes?

As I understand it TRUTH is pure, intuitive, logical thought which then translates into a multitude of sensations within the mind/body/spirit complex of the SOUL. Where does it all lead? Do we really have a choice in the matter, or is it simply an imminent program poised in the cosmic computer queue ready to self-correct? Hmmmm…. Imagine that… on all levels of our known existence and more. Resources that are currently allocated to less-than-friendly actions need to be redistributed to life-friendly causes, eh? And what of the effect of thought on our personal experience or our environment?

Love is said to be the true foundation of the Galactic Federation or Confederation of Planets, and the mission of the Ashtar Command as many are finding in their search for extraterrestrial assistance in the face of non-conformity of life-friendly international actions on the planet’s surface now. Quite a number would probably find the idea of such an organization totally coming from fantasy land. Maybe it does. Truth is often stranger than fiction. To some, just the opposite is true as well. To those of the latter mindset the agenda of the Ashtar Command makes perfect sense and they live in quiet support of it.

It’s been said that the ultimate understanding from studying the world religions is to move beyond the separative notions within them. Divine mysteries are too big for one religion. Perhaps the unity in diversity concept for organizational management could also fit into that category. Through study and understanding of the various belief systems and cultural differences there can be a peace, or at least working relationship, from finding and focusing on what makes us all the same. Good leaders focus on common elements and, in fact, make sense common to their rank and file through their efforts of demonstrating by example. Actions speak louder than words. We learned that as children.

So much has been happening to a certain portion of the planetary population that cause for concern, possibly consideration, is noteworthy in the expansion of our knowledge base in the information age. Those who feel some level of participation in the AC’s precepts sense a greater connectivity to cosmic cooperation and even cosmic consciousness – awareness of non-duality thinking and living. In most circles who are aware or feel involved, the AC is known for its Divinely-driven spiritual and material union for the benefit of all mankind, like a self-correcting program. It could be said that we are that self-correcting program that is now operational and seeking to serve humanity in a most profound and prophetic way.

What Can We Do?

As with any vision, someone has to see it, hold it, and share it without fear of repercussion in order to bring it into manifestation. It has to anchor into the consciousness of ONE first, and that ONE may be thousands in body, before it can manifest ubiquitously amongst humanity. This is what has to be realized as a collective organization before anything can proceed. Each one has assigned duties. I know this because I remember the meetings on board (conscious and participating in the process), while many others were in a dream state, unable to recall upon awakening yet having a faint remembrance. Some remember bits and pieces of such encounters and ignore them as some manifestation of archetypal imagery being addressed in the psyche.

The mental health professionals have been perplexed for decades regarding these experiences and stories of questionable validity for lack of proof. Still others have full memories of these experiences that are beyond the ‘normal’ scope of dreamtime. Indigenous elders have shared that we can affect and are affected by our dreamtime work. One set of these meetings, for me, lasted for nearly a week in February, 2001. Some of you may begin recalling them as you are reading these words. That means its working, beyond your belief, and you remember the EXPERIENCE. Now here’s the kicker… do you actually remember or do you WANT to have been there so bad that you create a memory of it? Just relax… all things will be revealed in time.

Others of you may want to totally disregard this paragraph. I’ve been called many things for my authentic expressions and questions of ‘reality;’ most of them not so nice. Many so-called Christians have thought me to be white-washed on the outside and full of Satan on the inside. I realize it is nothing personal – concepts and ideas are the triggers and I’m just a guy writing about his contemplations and ponderances of life’s offerings. I have to admit that I often have sincere doubts until I run into someone that says they met me on board or saw me in a dream or heard about me some other way. Not too many folks are willing to talk openly about inner things yet.

Now that this door has opened for you, if indeed it has, it will take a bit of time for the memories to surface, or not, to the point of actually performing your assigned duties if you have them – divinely orchestrated and perfect just for you. Truly.. I’m not sure everyone has a ‘mission’ of this type. There seems to be a natural hierarchy of order within this process, like the organizational structure of a large corporation. The premise is that we are cosmic consciousness condensed into form, becoming aware of the fact as we perceive our unity within diversity, the oneness of all things.

If this seems like total fabrication and science fiction, then it probably isn’t for you or maybe it is in you imagination at least. This process is beyond any one of my wildest dreams and possibly the culmination of all of them. Its magnitude and potential for success is beyond belief, yet very real as the potential of conscious activity proven by quantum physics and doctoral level metaphysicians continues to grow. Literally it is appearing as through a mandate of Creators’, so to speak, being a natural process for our planet and people at this juncture in the development of our specie.

For those that have the eyes to see and the ears to hear, my words may resonate with some authority, not because I wish to lead; because you are inextricably part of the process, too. No ONE of us is any better than another. Each has their role, and like the corporate hierarchy, each role is just as important to the achievement of the goals and objectives. To the rest of you it may just sound like it makes sense, but you have your doubts or you may feel like you are someone specially sanctioned to deliver a message. I think I got over the messianic complex long ago, even though it still rears its little head occasionally in my feeling world.

Those who resonate with this kind of experience know the plan is about representing a collective soul of sorts, the Christ Consciousness (Cosmic Consciousness) based in love and natural order of creation, beyond heretofore ‘human’ understanding, which becomes the outpicturing of faith and trust. This is how Creator will dwell with Man, in my opinion. There is still much more as we are indeed sons and daughters of this Creator, Source, the ONE or whatever your word is in your region of the world. Of course the original texts refer to Creator in the plural. The three suns I was shown over a decade ago may hold the key. What could that mean? That would mean ancestry that bridges quantum physics and religion.

We intuitively know of the ONE deep within us, yet there are many aspects that evolve in and around us. We’ve been collectively unaware of anything in between the dots we’ve connected. It has been referred to as the ‘dark matter’ that exists between particles of light, such as the proton, neutron, and electron. Imagine that! The current rapidly dwindling mindset would have you believe that there is a huge chasm between us and our Creator with little to no hope of ever reaching the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. Would that ancestry reside in what we call Heaven? What really is Heaven? What about bringing it to Earth?

Could Creator exist in the ‘space’ between the dots so that as we reconnect them, re-link our natural state, Creator’s presence is unmistakably present. Religion, after all, means reunion with Creator. Quantum physics is proving the theory mathematically. I say we can prove it physically with a trance-end-dance of dualistic consciousness and movement toward the natural harmony of the mind and heart. This seems to be happening beyond any personal opinions to the contrary. Would that ancestry maybe be connected to a few already? Hmmmm….

Beyond any appearance of self-absorbed or arrogant behavior, my intentions have always been to be submissive to possibility, faith and trust in a new world order of holistic proportions that fully demonstrates what we have been calling LOVE. Supposedly this is what everything is… limitless oscillating vibrational energy… LOVE. We’ve known for some time now, through scientific discovery, that everything has a vibration – from dis-ease to the purest light. Knowing that as my knowledge grows my ignorance often exponentiates, I approach every situation with an open mind and heart. I encourage you to approach your every day lives in the same manner.

I know that in that genuine openness, vulnerability and the innocence of a child, which equates to faith and trust is the ultimate protection from any harm. Every religion speaks to this point. I’m not asking you to believe any of this. Your own experience will either confirm or deny these things for you. At least it makes for a good story and could potentially have an awesome conclusion. The truth is, for me at least, that I’m still unraveling the enigma, the cosmic conundrum of ‘what does this all mean and what I am suppose to do?’

Spectrum Academy’s concept and design embodies the learning organization, constantly growing through leadership, educators, management, and staff that are change agents in themselves. Building a learning organization requires perseverance and persistence among the leadership team as there is normally much unlearning in the initial stages. Wise leadership anticipates the resistance and prepares pathways to shift the paradigm paralysis. Both external and internal forces have created the need for change within the areas of focus addressed by Spectrum’s plan. Facilitating a learning organization such as Spectrum Academy challenges the leadership to create a new model of change for the paradigm paralysis in education and juvenile correctional systems to date, which

Information Gathering – Organizational Capabilities

Education and communication, includes so-called “students-at-risk”, most of whom have severe difficulties learning within a mechanistic reductionistic paradigm, which emphasizes linear, sequential processes. Such has been the process of management in most of the facilities that address at-risk youth. Natural and common sense questions come forth for the gathering of information to facilitate the learning organization. What kinds of programs are working elsewhere, even if they are only pieces of Spectrum’s vision? How are these organizations implementing a structure that recognizes and adapts to what works while learning from and minimizing what does not? What and where are the performance gaps and disconnects? What are these old patterns within the existing systems and how/where would they manifest? What kinds of demonstrable results can be anticipated, documentable and observable? What metrics have been or can be used for documentation? The answers contribute to the factors that facilitate organizational learning, such as scanning imperatives, performance gaps, and concern for measurement.

Additional data is acquired by answering more questions. What are the key features of transformational leadership necessary in this quest for change, within the youths and in the potential residual personal patterns of staff that may inhibit the process? How are they evidenced? What process can be used to share observations and concerns? What are the alternatives that produce a paradigm shift toward patterns that engage transformation through use of behavioral and situational leadership? What organizations are having success with peer-community building? What continuous training will be necessary for leadership, management, staff and teachers? What are the leadership needs for the various business units within Spectrum? In the key areas of operation, who are the key leaders and what skill sets do they need to support operations? The answers to these questions focus on the experimental mindset, climate of openness, continuous education and operational variety within Spectrum Academy.

What kinds of communication channels are necessary to keep open lines of communication between all levels of the organization? Where and who are the apparent advocates and gatekeepers of procedure and process? How is the vision and mission maintained through the leadership team, relative to the educators, staff, youth and community stakeholders? What are the organizational goals and are they clear to the stakeholders? How does the interdependence of the business units, residential treatment center, charter school and community technology center, empower optimization of organizational goals and utilize problems to produce solutions of systemic relationships? These questions focus on the need for multiple advocates, involvement of leadership, and systems perspective of this learning organization as Spectrum Academy.

Learning Organizations

Metanoia, a shift in mind, is the core of a learning organization’s thrust for change. It can be said that a point of perspection dances in the balance of the seer’s vision. It is this ‘dance’ of the mind that seeks balance, order, and structure in the process of change; ultimately a ‘shift’ toward learning. Peter Senge details five key elements of a learning organization: systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, building shared vision, and team learning.  He describes the team as – “a group of people who functioned together in an extraordinary way –  who trusted one another, who complemented each others’ strengths and compensated for each others’ limitations, who had common goals that were larger than individual goals, and who produced extraordinary results.” (Senge, 1990) According to the text, “A practical interpretation of these ideas results in the following definition. A learning organizationis one that proactively creates, acquires, and transfers knowledge and that changes its behavior on the basis of new knowledge and insights.” (Kreitner, 2001)

Initial Feature Introductions

Tom Peters says that, “The ultimate stage of involvement is the regular, spontaneous taking of initiative.” (Thriving on Chaos, 1987) It is only appropriate that education, from a systemic and systematic standpoint, finds new ways to draw out the unique individuality of an employee, a manager, or a student. Any system is the synergy of its parts, greater than the sum. “Because differentiation is one-half of a complex consciousness, each person must follow his or her own bent, find ways to realize his or her unique individuality.” (Evolving Self, 1993) The ‘systems’ approach here is to identify and nurture the natural skill sets of the individual in order for them to find their natural order and place within the collective,  evidencing and exampling a holistic view.

Resistance to Change

Humans often resist anything new. Crafting an approach to the resistance of the concept and application of holistic education offers opportunity to discover solutions to fix the flaws and close the gaps in the current approach. What we propose is a much better fit to the current situation and needs of the evolving student. An integrated system naturally addresses inherent conflict and provides tools to ascend from it, using the conflict to engage creative thinking rather than rote action, which the latter is accessing much lower levels of brain activity such as the fight or flight syndrome. “The survival of our ego is at stake. Our vision begins to be stated in things we don’t want- ‘I don’t want to fail,’ ‘I don’t want to be unhealthy,’ or ‘I don’t want to want to be poor.” (Magic of Conflict, 1987)

What fits here is the need to move toward collaboration rather than resistance. Our current educational environment often contributes to ‘moving away from’ rather than moving toward a goal or a vision, even though it is often stated otherwise. The fear of failure often precludes the joy of success. Trust means letting go of fear, even when you are vulnerable. Change creates vulnerability. Often the affect is not the desired outcome. A holistic approach includes the development and nurturing of the creative nature within the human being; what is supposed to be at the core of our person. This ‘fit’ has obvious benefit for both participants and staff at all levels.

Changes in Organizational Culture

The function of holistic education within the community exemplifies the systems approach in business, education, and community. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s research identifies some interesting details that not only acknowledge the obvious; they reveal potential structure for creating environments that illicit personal and professional growth, which is so necessary for the future of students and their success in life.

“As our studies have suggested, the phenomenology of enjoyment has eight major components. … The combination of all these elements causes a sense of deep enjoyment that is so rewarding people feel that expending a great deal of energy is worthwhile simply to be able to feel it.” (Flow, 1990)

Adults- educators, employees, leaders, managers, and professionals- throughout the structure will also notice an elevated feeling of accomplishment, which reflects in a stronger desire for change and results in promoting the new paradigm within the structure of the organization in carrying out the vision and mission.

Employee-Manager Relationships

Creation of win/win scenarios in the development stages of Spectrum Academy includes improvement in the manager/employee relationships. The strategic plan calls for the negotiation of resources (hard to soft), processes, and the inclusion of production and/or distribution of the products to be achieved through collaborative research and development projects, effectively partnering for profit.  Our customers are our students, their parents and/or guardians, the community, and other educational institutions that are shifting paradigm approaches toward education through purchasing the school’s products.

Prioritization of goals requires the business administration and operations of Spectrum Academy’s scorecard to be a primary concern. Developing partnerships empowers everyone to contribute their best efforts toward the success of Spectrum Academy. Looking at the specific example of old paradigm adversarial labor relations, partnerships between managers and employees bring a fresh approach to problem solving. The following example of interest-based negotiation comes from a working model in Michigan.

“What is the Interest-Based Process?
It is the non-adversarial approach to labor issues that can be used for negotiations, problem-solving, communications and relationships and improving school climate.

Why it Works
The interest-based process is based on objective reasoning rather than power or coercion. Because it is analytic and creative, it helps people employ these strengths as partners in problem-solving and decision-making. Unlike traditional negotiations where there are winners and losers, all parties in the interest-based process own the solution. There is mutual commitment to the process and its results.” (MECA, 1999)

The speed at which youth learn and adapt often intimidates adults that have forgotten the voracious appetites of young learners. Even young adults are far more adaptable to changing environments than in the past, even the previous generation. This can also affect staff performance. The creation of manager/employee partnerships can effectively smooth out the bumps in the process.

Embracing the Leadership of Change

The world thrives on the continuing development of technology. Leadership technology applied in psychospiritual, scientific, and organizational arenas facilitates a learning organization toward optimal performance. Both hard and soft technologies are critical in the ever-expanding insatiable curiosity of humans. Oftentimes we ‘do not know what cannot be done’ because there has never been much of the new technology focused in this particular direction.

We are learning to construct new models of reality with technology, inclusive of the educational and treatment arenas. The personal leadership of the writer embraces the optimal tenets of behavioral, charismatic, situational, transactional, and transformational styles. All of the past learning and development of personal style seems to fit perfectly into this environment. Anticipation of acceleration into recognized mastery among the employees, management, youth, and stakeholders outside the facility is appropriate consideration it would seem.

Monitoring the Process – Utilizing a Balanced Scorecard

The goals for the scorecard of administration and operations include customer, financial, innovation/learning and internal business perspectives. Our customers are our students, their parents and/or guardians, the community, and other educational/treatment institutions that are shifting paradigms. Prioritization of goals requires the business administration and operations of Spectrum Academy’s scorecard to be a primary concern. It currently looks like this:

Customer Perspective

    1. Our customers are consistently satisfied with the products and services provided by Spectrum Academy business administration and stakeholders.
    2. Our stakeholders recognize the value of our contribution to the Spectrum Academy mission:
      • Quality and efficiency of operations
      • Ethical exercise of fiduciary responsibility
      • Holistic approach to education/treatment
      • Creation of collaborative alliances

Financial Perspective

  1. We ensure Spectrum Academy financial integrity and demonstrate fiduciary responsibility for capital and financial assets throughout the system.
  2. We deliver our services in an efficient, cost-effective manner. The value we create exceeds the cost of creating it.
